Pupil Premium
The aim of the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is to support schools in raising the achievements of the most disadvantaged pupils.
More specifically, it is hoped that these pupils will benefit from increased social mobility and have improved chances of accessing higher education.
At St John’s we consider additional strategies when planning effective intervention to maximise the impact of this funding for PPG pupils.
Who is Eligible?
For pupils to qualify for Free School Meals (FSM) pupils must be:
The process for applying is straightforward and confidential. You can check online using a free school meals (FSM) / Pupil Premium service for Bedford and Central Bedfordshire residents:
- Children of families in receipt of Income Support/Job Seekers Allowance/Income Related Employment and Support Allowance/Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and whose household income does not exceed £16,190 pa.
- Children Looked After (CLA); a child who is in local authority care continuously for 6 months.
- Children with parents in the armed forces (service children).
After completing the application, you will be informed of the outcome and we will be notified. The FSM grant will be given from the date of the application.
Your child will then get a Free School Meal every day from the school’s menu.

All enquiries will be treated in confidence. Pupils in KS1 are automatically entitled to a free school lunch, however this does not mean they are automatically entitled to the Pupil Premium Grant.

The government is providing funding to cover a one-off universal catch-up premium for the 2020 to 2021 academic year.
It aims to support pupils to catch up for lost learning so schools can meet the curriculum expectations for the next academic year.
