St. John’s offers Key Stage 1 to 4 pupils access to the National Curriculum which includes coverage of the three core subjects of English, Maths and Science plus the foundation subjects of ICT, Design Technology, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, PE., Art and Music.
As well as these subject areas, Citizenship, Personal, Social, and Health Education (CPSHE) is seen as an important part of all pupils’ education.
Religious Education is also provided. However parents/carers have the right to withdraw a child from RE or Collective Worship following consultation with the Headteacher.
The school curriculum includes provision for early years and post sixteen pupils. Younger pupils follow the Foundation Stage curriculum. All pupils in Key Stage 4 work towards accreditation through ASDAN Transition Challenge.
Post sixteen pupils are taught in the FE Phase where they access accredited modules of ASDAN Towards Independence and OCR National Skills Profile. They have the opportunity to explore the world of work through school based modules and experiences in school and the community. Pupils take part in links with Bedford College.
The school curriculum is enriched by the use of resources outside of St. John’s e.g. visits to the local community, use of public sports facilities, etc. Strong links exist with other schools and our pupils experience various curriculum areas by accessing facilities in mainstream schools. Three groups of St. John’s post sixteen pupils are based off site at the St. John’s Annexe at Biddenham Upper School and Sports College.
Pupils from other schools’ come into St. John’s to share sessions and resources.
